Although livestock is of enormous significance for the poor, livestock
development projects have a dismal record with respect to poverty alleviation.
Besides institutional deficiencies, one reason for this has been the
lack of consideration for livestock keepers’ own resources, institutions and
knowledge. Many technological advances foisted upon livestock
keepers have not been adopted.
Together with other NGOs, notably the League for
Pastoral Peoples, LPPS is promoting the concept of “people-centered
livestock development”. This emphasizes pre-project research to make visible the
existing indigenous knowledge. It takes into account its specific cultural aspects before
trying to implement any changes.
